Prompted recall is when you recognise the info only after it’s mentioned or you see it written, perhaps as a list of options as in a multiple choice test.

– Korea

– China

– Thailand

The second example is in the form of multiple-choice. The list of possible choices prompts or cues your recall. In the first example, you had to search your memory for the answer.

Some multiple-choice tests, especially at university level, are so well designed it requires thorough knowledge of the topic to gain a pass mark. However, more often, multiple-choice is easier. When given a list of alternatives, it is usually easier to recognise the correct answer.
